The in-between stage of transformation is seldom celebrated, at least in our culture, yet it is so vitally crucial to our soul’s growth and awakening.
I’m currently watching my teenager transform into a young adult and remember when it happened to me. The discomfort, the yearning for my own place in the world, yet still needing the support home could give me. Recently I’ve become a driver’s education teacher to the transforming teen in our house. Learning to drive is definitely the in-between. Stressful, uncomfortable, uncertain, with some joy sprinkled in.
The in-between place is where you aren’t what you used to be any longer, yet there’s still a distance to go before you become what you’re yearning for. It’s the space between identities. The orange blob the caterpillar turns into before becoming a butterfly.
Every client I coach is in the in-between. They may come to me not quite there, but after a session or two the in-between meets them. The process of becoming isn’t linear. It’s more like a melting down. It often requires grieving the old – no matter how happy you are to be done with it – and aligning with the new. Old beliefs have to go, new beliefs emerge, and the struggle between the two often leads to the most gorgeous wings when it comes time to fly.
Awakening and becoming something new all together is a process we go through many times in our lifetime, and it always requires time.
The in-between, when given time, is the sacred gateway to the unknown version of ourselves that we know lives within us. When tended to, we often surprise ourselves with interests we didn’t know we have, abilities that were dormant come alive, and new ideas of who we are emerge. The in-between is what makes us such dynamic, creative, wondrous beings, yet culturally we are taught to rush through and decide who we are at a young age and never change our minds again.
In this Sunday’s group coaching session we will talk about the in-between and what it means to stay in it, what we need to feel nurtured and supported and what is pulling us forward. I hope you can join us. You can register here
There is something in all of us right now pulling us forward, to even more expressive, creative, unique version of ourselves that want to weave into the fabric of our world. The in-between is the time we need to create and become.
Here’s to staying in it until we are strong enough to fly somewhere new.
Lots of love,
